Lol - yeah, I have a few legacy machines like that lying around. But since my main daily driver is also a legacy machine....

I really need to build a machine this year.

Latest in a long line of medical tests this month today. Seems it looks like I'm going deaf, imagine that. Two workshops about hearing loss in the next few weeks and then fitting for hearing aids. Don't know what to think about that truthfully.

That's tough Scott. Things tend to stop working when you get older but you have a bit to go yet.

Yeah, I know. Actually asked the Audiologist if it was just getting older. She said partly but there's damage from loud noises (the range of the loss points to that). Seeing as to how I was in Artillery my first enlistment, truck driver in second plus working in metal cutting / fabrication a big chunk of the time I wasn't on the road, I can see that. Not too bad yet, "severe loss" but I can still make things out ........ except whispers . The Tinnitus getting so very much worse recently is the only reason I had it checked to be honest.

Working in a noisy environment can do that for you. So far I've been fortunate in that respect.

I have very little loss, in spite of my penchant for loud metal music, but I've also have tinnitus, and have had it all of my life. I very vividly remember getting my very first hearing test done in elementary school (it was a mandate for all school children, a couple of times in their elementary matriculation, 2nd and then again in 5th grade, IIRC) and when they started hitting the higher frequency notes I had 2 or 3 of them that I thought I heard something and had to stop and think about - because they were almost the same frequencies as the ringing (which, in my ears, is more like a continuous high-frequency digital beep). But in spite of it, I also had a phenomenal hearing range, better in higher frequencies than lower. My folks had one of the original Sony Trinitron color TVs (19" tube type) and more often than not I could here it when the tube fired up after someone turned the TV on (a very high pitched whine, that escalated in range until I could no longer hear it, over the span of a couple of seconds) - even on the other side of the house. Same thing with other electronics - like cell phone chargers, OMG, I heard so many whining that no one else could ever hear....

However, with age, my range has since gotten more narrow (and thus more normal). Of course, electronics also got better, so there is a lot less whine produced at the frequencies that I can hear than used to be....

I suppose that the only reason mine does not bother me is that I've lived with it literally my whole life - sometimes, like now, it is very noticeable, but it is also very quite right now, as it is late at night here. But other times it fades int he background, and particularly when I ma engaged in something - reading, watching TV, listening to music (which partially explains why I am such an audiophile to begin with).

But to have this onset in your adult life would be pure murder - I know, because even as much as I said the above, there are times when it drives me absolutely insane. Best thing I can suggest is that you try to occupy your mind as much as possible to distract it from hearing it. There are other things that help somewhat, but I've never tried any actual medication (again, as I said, I'm used to it, so why bother?)

I'm in same boat, right ear stopped working altogether. That happened over 15 years ago, si it's probably not age related but because prolonged exposure to high sound levels, from loud music and being a DJ in disco, motorcycle and car racing, shooting and noisy factory conditions. I was warned about those things but young people don't always heed it and neither did I. I could never stand earplugs and earmuffs were not always convenient. Bad tinnitus started more than 25 years ago, the worst part is different frequencies i both ears.

    What did you all say?

Probably should get hearing aids as well. First off someone slapping me on the left ear with cusped hand as a young child did damage. Never passed a hearing test in school with that ear ever. About 30% hearing there. Working construction has caused a lot of damage. Of course sitting just feet from Led Zeppelin and other concerts as a teener probably didn't help. First the filters to focus in on someone speaking in a crowd went. Then the Tinnitus set in. I've tuned that out until mentioned like here.

The ADD doesn't help either. I'll say what out of habit even though I heard the person. I used to think about 6 different things at once. I have it down to 4 now. LOL. Drives my kids nuts. I tell them it's a payback when they didn't listen.
