    Driverless Cars - any views

    Hi there

Change from the more silly stuff on this section - like what are you watching etc.

I see more and more places are going to start testing in some form or other Driverless cars.

Just wondering what people think of this -- as people on a Computer Forum we probably understand more about "Algorithms" and problem solving than most -- however I'm really curious as to how a Driverless car would behave when confronted with a totally idiotic aggressive Human driver ignoring every rule of the road -- I'm sure we've all seen those type of drivers on the road probably more often than we should !!.

Seems classic brew of accidents and Lawyers fests. !!!

I'm not against technology but I think any sort of AI has many years to go yet if it can factor in Human petulance and react to it properly !!!.

    Cheers

i would never place complete trust in driverless vehicles. i would rather drive on my own. glitches could occur at any time. like the tesla incidents recently.

    Hypothetical situation.

A vehicle with multiple occupants pulls out in front of you. Not enough room to stop without hitting something, no clear escape route without other obstacles. Onboard AI has to make a decision between two options.

Option one, crash into the other vehicle killing some or all occupants, you survive with injuries.

Option two, crash your vehicle avoiding the other vehicle, killing only you?

We already have driverless cars. Only we call them distracted drivers.

I don't like the idea of them, I wouldn't trust them, rather have people behind the wheel doing the driving. But I know what you mean Winuser, the people with cell phones drive me nuts, was almost run off the road at 70mph by some woman talking on hers, she was swerving in and out of the lanes like a drunk. The sad part is, she was totally oblivious that anything even happened, wasn't conscious at all of the vehicles around her.

The ones who are always texting are really dangerous, I see more and more people doing it. They'll park 1 1/2 car lengths from the intersection at a red light with their head down texting away. Then when the light changes, and they finally wake up and start driving again, they make the light and you're left waiting for it to cycle again. Okay...rant over. :)

I don't know much about the self driving cars, but I figure if they have glitches like computers, it could be a big problem.

I had a driver run into the back of my Explorer one night because of texting. I had to slow down because the driver in front of me was making a turn and she ran right into me. My Explorer had very minor damage but her car was totaled. Luckily no one was hurt.

And yet you put your fate in the taxi or bus driver, who might have been driving for 24 hours. Computers should be more reliable than humans, but hard to tell yet. In the end it is about your choice: glitches vs human errors.

Manufacturers have already agreed to protect the driver and kill everyone else. Who else would buy their cars then?!
