I thought I would follow up here on my 950XL experience after a month or so of ownership.
The short version: Just Awesome!
Re the app gap: I don't do social apps period and prefer my interactions the old fashioned way. I don't take photos for glory or the benefit of others and I have no desire for the world to know how I'm dressed as I walk out the door
On Store apps (generally): Just my take of course, but Microsoft would do well to clean out the store of so called apps that are nothing more than advertising billboards with very little functioning app remaining. This is the biggest and only disappointment for me as a relatively new Win10 user on both PC and mobile.
Otherwise reminders, email, radio and note taking are all available. Browsing the net, news etc. and of course actually ringing people...
I found the battery life very good and actually improved after a few charging cycles. The hardware is solid, nice camera and the overall feel is light despite the 950XL being a large phone. The customizable start screen makes this thing a joy to use not ever being more than a couple of clicks from anywhere.
I'm personally left scratching my head as to why Lumia phones of this calibre 'failed'...
