I have a first gen, I used it with KODI on my Pi. Not in use at the moment though. I've been meaning to reprogram it to work with my XBOX Media remote. I think I'll actually do that latter on today. There was one function (button) missing on the remote I was using that I wanted in KODI. I don't remember what it was but I do remember it made things a pain at times. If the XBOX remote doesn't cut it I have 3 or 4 TV remotes to try too.

I would rather use a remote than a keyboard for KODI. The mouse right click function I think was the issue for me. I like to play an album then cue one or two more for play after that one finishes. I do that with a right click on the album name. Doing the same thing with the remote was a PITA. Time to have another go at it though I think. I bought the bloody thing, may as well use it.

It's pretty easy to setup. You install the setup software on your PC. Plug it in. Then pick the app/program your going to program it for. KODI is in the list. Then you pick a function (button) you want to program. Click that button on your remote and it learns that remotes code for that button. You basically map all the buttons on your remote to the functions for that program. Once its all programed you just plug it into your Pi. To the Pi its just a USB keyboard mouse. No drivers to install or any fancy setup needed. It should be the same deal for your Android box. You can probably do the setup in Linux on the Pi, I just find it easier to do the setup on my PC. Just about any remote should do.

I've had mine for a while, don't remember when I bought it or how much I paid for it. There is a little bit of electronics in it. An EPROM to store the codes, the IR receiver, and all the USB interface stuff. Probably a microcontroller too. Mine has a clear plastic case but I'd need a microscope to read the text on the chips inside. I'm pretty sure one is a microcontroller, it has many teeny tiny contacts on all 4 sides. I just reprogramed mine with a Hauppauge Remote. I have a TV tuner card for my PC. I couldn't get the remote that came with it to work. Contacted Hauppauge tech support and they sent me another one for free. In the end it wasn't an issue with the remote so I now have a spare. It should have all the buttons I need. I mapped all the ones shown for the KODI option. I haven't plugged it into my Pi yet to test it out. Tonight or tomorrow probably.

You should be able to program it to work with any IR remote control you have on hand. It's just finding a remote with all the buttons/functions you want. TV remotes often don't have the play pause etc buttons.

Having a couple of issues with my FLIRC. In KODI on my Pi, I have to press each button twice? If I press the same button twice in a row it ignores the second button press. It appears its because of the code the remote sends out? To fix it I need to record each button twice. I decided to try my Bell cable box remote instead. Switched it to AUX for device and went at it. Got errors though. The 3 key doesn't seem to want to program in?
I wouldn't rush to buy one Jack. I don't remember having issues like this last time I used it though? I don't remember what remote I used though, or if I still have it somewhere? This a newer latter model Bell remote so maybe it was my older one that I had to replace. I just erased my FLIRC and will have another go at it latter on. Not in the mood to mess with it anymore at the moment.
