TC, I know if you put in a Windows 10 Installation USB, BIOS will see it and will see a Macrium rescue USB. But, I'm not sure about USB external drives, although I don't know why they would be treated differently.

I just tried it with an external USB Hard drive. It would BSOD every time I tried. BIOS does see the boot manager, and it will try to boot from it, but no luck. It will boot from the USB Flash drive I made it from though. Go figure.

    That's a shame.

OK, tried it again, but used a USB 3.0 port instead of a 2.0 port. It worked. Don't ask me why, but it did.

Hmm. Sounds like it's not to be relied on then.

Keith, I'm not sure. The USB drive I used is with a cable and also has a backup OS on it from another machine. It could have been me. If I selected to boot from the other OS, it shouldn't boot. So, it could have been me. On a backup USB drive, there would be no other bootable systems to boot from. So, it should work. I thought about it after it wouldn't boot at first and then did. That is my only explanation.

By way of explanation, I used a spare SSD with a USB cable to connect it to the USB port, like this.

Unfortunately I don't have any spare drives to try it on ATM.

All you have to do is create a Macrium recovery USB. Then shrink your USB Hard drive Partition 1 GB and format it FAT32. Copy the contents of the USB Flash drive to the partition you created on the Hard drive. It should then be bootable. It doesn't have to be an empty drive, but it should be a hard drive where nothing else is bootable, I think.
