I went to a Brit grammar school, usually travelling by omnibus, so I comprehend your second reference! My favourite "latin" joke was " I asked her to conjugate, but she declined."
When I was about 12, my Dad and I were given a 1936 BSA Hercules Tandem, in pieces, wrapped in oil-soaked cloths that had been stored in a cellar in Balsall Heath.
We lovingly restored it and made it roadworthy.
I remember regular taunts of "Can you ride Tandem?"once we took it to the streets of Birmingham, and my Dad, undaunted, used the machine to take blind cyclists around the lanes of Warwickshire until he himself became too old, in his 70's.
Due to lack of available storage space, I finally had to sell the machine on EBay after his death in 2006, to a tandem enthusiast who motored 150 miles to claim his winning bid, so I guess it probably is still in existence.
