Simple fact is you should never look at the sun with any magnifying device, whatever filter you have in place ... simply get a piece of white card and project the magnified image onto that, use a filter to reduce image glare by all means but never look towards the sun directly

Many telescopes used to come with a solar filters that screwed into an eyepiece. They were dangerous because they could get too hot and crack. The best advice for those filters was to throw them in the garbage.

You have good advice for the average person who doesn't realize how dangerous it is to look at the sun unless they know how to do it safely. However, there are safe ways to do it if you have the proper equipment. I used to have a Celestron C8 telescope. I bought a solar filter that mounted on the front of the telescope. With it, it was perfectly safe to view the sun looking through my telescope. Note he filter was made of aluminized mylar. It is not just any aluminized mylar but specially chosen and tested to safely block the sun. BTW, many years ago I worked at a solar observatory so I am very familiar with safe ways of observing the sun.

On a 6" Newtonian reflector telescope I didn't have a solar filter so I used to project the image of the Sun onto a piece of cardboard. However, one time I did use a piece of welding glass with an eyepiece to look at the Sun. Note not any piece of welding glass might be safe. I used one with the proper density that was supposed to be safe.

The Celestron C8 telescope had Schmidt-Cassegrain optics. I never use it to project the Sun onto a piece if cardboard because I read that doing so risked damaging the telescope internally.

My Celestron C8 with its Solar Filter. With it I could look directly at the Sun through the eyepiece at the back of the telescope. Note I do have covers over both my finder telescopes. I didn't want to forget and accidentally look through them at them Sun.

There is an app for that. NASA app is called Spot the Station.

Actually tells you next day you will be able to see it go overhead. Comes with a countdown clock to exact time it is overhead.
