    Most people probably don't realize how hard it is to fly a helicopter in Mars' thin atmosphere.

    At ground level the Martian atmosphere has a pressure of 0.095 psi as compared to the Earth's sea level atmospheric pressure of 14.7 psi.That is equivalent to the pressure at an altiude of 35 km (22 mi) on the Earth. This means this is like trying to fly a helicopter on the earth at an altitude of about 100,000 feet. On the earth even military helicopters can't fly much higher than 15,000 feet. The record for any helicopter is about 40,000 feet.

    Atmospheric pressure
    Earth* = 1013 mbar = 101 kPa = 14.7 psi = 1.00 standard atmosphere
    Mars = 6.518 mbar = 0.66 kPa = 0.095 psi = 0.00646 standard atmospheres
    * at sea level

    During the moon landings in the 60's, the President of the US had 2 statement letters prepared, one for a successful landing & one if something went wrong.

    There was always the risk that things could go wrong. If nothing else Apollo 13 taught us that.
