Today, a little over two decades since the first confirmation that planets beyond our solar system actually exist, comes the biggest exoplanet announcement yet -- one that could change everything.

Researchers have discovered an Earth-like planet orbiting a red dwarf star at a range where conditions might be right for water, and maybe, just maybe, life. Proxima Centauri, at just over 4 light-years away, is the closest star to Earth besides our own sun.

We have a thread over at SF where we post any space related stuff, as SF is getting quieter, I though I'd start moving it over here.

Note - most of my news comes in via twitter, if you are just seeing blank posts from me in this thread they are embedded tweets and you have something installed blocking twitter.

    So to start off.....

Thank you very much for this thread, John! I love space stuff!

They found the lander, it is a shame that after all those years it bounced into a crack.

The discovery comes less than a month before Rosetta descends to the comet’s surface. On 30 September, the orbiter will be sent on a final one-way mission to investigate the comet from close up, including the open pits in the Ma’at region, where it is hoped that critical observations will help to reveal secrets of the body’s interior structure.
