Anak: our shortest day is Dec 21st, from then on it becomes lighter quicker, and longer. I have always taken that to be Mid Winter.
Note that even though December 21st is the shortest day it is usually not the coldest. It has to do with physics. The Earth and its atmosphere like any large masses takes time for the temperature to change. That is true whether it is warming or cooling. On average the coldest time in the northern hemisphere is about two months later in February. Likewise, in the Summer on average the hottest time is not on June 21st the longest day but a month or two later in July or August.
Why Winter is Cold if the Earth is Closer to the Sun

I understand, whether we know it or not humans develop milestones or markers in our lives to help navigate the rigors of daily life.
One of mine is when I start to see Orion rising in the SE I know Winter is on its way. Another is that I won't plant my garden until after May 15th, that's the last day for frost in my region.
It sure is! And it's still a matter of survival.
Thanks everyone, for the replies/info. Here in the UK we experience our coldest weather Jan and Feb, sometimes into March. I think things are changing though. Temperatures currently are 'too warm' we have recently experienced 12 - 15C. 15C is or was a normal average summer temp. Its currently 12C. I usually feed my, small pond, fish wheatgerm if the temp drops below 10C; but that only happened (with ice) 2 weeks or so before Christmas. Apparently its the Arctic 'vortex's getting screwed up.
From what I have found so far to watch the following UK launch . . .
On Monday (January 9), a modified 747 jumbo jet will launch a rocket over the Atlantic to take nine satellites high above the Earth, as part of The Virgin Orbit: Start Me Up mission.
