Eclipse map & percentages. If you're in the USA, this will show how much of the eclipse coming up Aug 21st will be visible to your area.

A map of the United States showing the path of totality for the August 21, 2017 total solar eclipse. This is version 2 of the map, available at both 5400 × 2700 and 10,800 × 5400.

Here's the map I'm using, it's shown in the snip below.

This link will take you to the main page, when you get there click anywhere within the turquoise block to go to the interactive map shown in the center of the block.

You can also click anywhere on the interactive map and a popup will describe the viewing conditions for the area you clicked on.

Meteor shower season is here and this is the weekend to watch

The fantastic Perseid meteor shower peaks in August, but a bright full moon on August 7 this year means late July is the time to watch for the famous "shooting stars."

If you head outside at night over the next few days to try to catch them, you'll also benefit from the overlap of two other meteor showers: the lesser-known Alpha Capricornids that will peak Thursday night and then hang around a few more nights, and the Southern Delta Aquariids that will peak Saturday and Sunday.

    That's right, it's a three-for-one red-hot space rock show that won't cost you a dime.

    You're welcome.

With my birthday being August 15th I've enjoyed the Perseid's for quite a few years, my problem? It never seems to fail that the dates around the maximum (Aug. 12th) are usually cloudy.

In checking my version of Stellarium for August 7th the seeing won't be too bad with Perseus in the East, Northeast quadrant of the sky and the Moon should be pretty much to your back in the South, Southwest , it won't be as good as a new Moon phase, but at least the Moon won't be directly in the viewing area, over the years I've seen the Moon between Cetus and Pisces during the event and that was a total wash-out.
