Since there was not much of an explosion does that mean the tanks were nearly empty when that happened?

At least SN9 did not take out SN10 when it crashed and blew up. That would really have been bad.
yes, fuel was calculated to a 10 min flight up to 10 km height, a steered glide and then reignition for touchdown. The fuel was liquid methane/oxygen so really there was not much left to 'burn'. What bust the rocket was the fall, not the 'bang'. Also you may have seen oxygen being vented when still high up. I think what they did was, when at apogee, they pumped the fuel into a different tank for descent, and what was left was vented.

Space Shuttle Pathfinder is at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. It is seen in the photo I took 20 years ago. Note the Saturn IB and Saturn V exhibits to the right. The Saturn V seen was never real rocket but only specially built display. However, there is real Saturn V nearby that was left over when the program ended. It is in a building to preserve it because it was designated a National Historic Landmark. To the far left is a cylindrically shaped building. This is the dormitory for Space Camp.

Sky tv Reporter commenting on Arab satellite in orbit around Mars. 'Remember, it had to be decelerated from 75 MILLION miles per hour." what an idiot
