Think I found the problem with no 'net connection on the back up lappy.
A clean install of Ubuntu would not get on line.

Then tried to use the 6 recovery disk's for XP.
After the first disk completed, a pop up said the driver for network communications module failed to install.

This might mean there is a problem with the 802.11a/b/g combination WLAN module 373033-001.
There is a chance I could dig it out and reset it to see if it will work or buy another one and replace it
    while its apart.

Would there be anything else I can check or try before I take it apart ?
The lappy is a HP Compaq nc6220. Yes its old but its good enough for a back up.
