I've been a chicken shit as far as add-ons go. The last time I tried installing some it went south. Then eventually OPENELECT just crashed and wouldn't boot up anymore.

I just watched the video in the link you posted and she states that you can run the mini screen and a second screen on HDMI at the same time. She mentions scripts etc too. Have a look at the video Jack. It's the last window in the bunch of screen shoots they have posted for that display. I just got up and haven't finished my first cup of Java, I will have a look at that for you just not right now. Once I walk my dog and get a second cup of coffee in me I'll have a good look. Not sure I know what most of those lines of code mean but I take a look. I'm still thinking of getting one of those screens, won't be a for while though.

thanks for looking I watched the video many times ,,,I cant get it to boot to hdmi, either with or with out the pitft plugged in at the same time or alone ,,,its one thing to say it will run hdmi at the same time ,but its another thing to find a, "how to" ,on making it work .. also in the config file it looks like its under clocking the device to 700,and to uncomment to make it 800,,, seems to me the video and there hacked version is out dated ,even though it stated that the adafruit info was added in march this year

Just did the firmware update and the other update. Quit a bit was done, not sure what, but lots of action on the screen during both updates. Didn't do anything for my touch screen issues in KODI though. One thing I noticed is KODI does actually shut down when I click EXIT. I just don't get my screen back. Raspbian is still running in the background, the screen is just blank? I remote desktoped in and was able to then shut down Raspbian.

About all I can tell you is its Debian based. I see a Debian Reference Icon on the screen. Looks like a model a or B Pi from the picture, not a B+ or 2B. The ICON in the lower left corner looks very familiar though. Just can't remember where I've seen it before?
