    Grammar and Spelling Help

The object of this thread is to help those who want to be helped with spelling and grammar.

Do you know the difference between your and you’re?

Or, are you thinking, “I don’t know my grammar from a hole in the ground?”

Are you trying to dig yourself out of that grammar hole?

Your is a possessive pronoun: it belongs to you; it’s yours; you possess something.

You’re is a contraction; it is the shortened form of you are.

This is only one example of what can go wrong with grammar. Spelling is another thing altogether.

    Example#1
I'd like to have a download of [your/you're] theme.
Think: I'd like to have a download of [you are] theme. Nope, that doesn't work, so it must be your (possessive).

    Example#2
I'd like to know if [your/you're] modifying the theme.
Think: I'd like to know if [you are] modifying the theme (yep, that works!).

So, give us your questions on spelling or grammar and your pet grammar peeves, etc.

And, above all, let’s enjoy this thread and help to educate each other.

Auto-correct and spell checkers are to blame. They are killing all languages, can't differentiate words in their own context !!

Yeppers, you got it! However, when in doubt, come here and ask a question. Or post your own pet peeve about the errors grammar and spell check miss.

Edit: Personally, I don't use 'em myself. Although when Word tells me I misspelled something, I will check to be sure. Grammar checkers are almost useless with the English (US) language!

I have another problem, My English is mostly of Canadian variety, That can have different spelling for many words. Color > Colour, Check > Cheque (as for bank) etc. Throw in there some words with completely different meaning in GB English, Lorry > Truck, Bonnet > Hood, Boot > Trunk etc.

Yup, so we announce our "heritage".

I read a lot and have been a proof reader in a past life, so I can generally tell if the book was written/published in something other than US English. Those and many more words are skipped over as correct. :)

    Hi Wynona.

Maybe you can explain the 's for me. It always confuses me. I'll use the name Mike as an example.

So, for example, wouldn't the word "Mike's" be a contraction of the words Mike and is or is the 's possessive or both?

Example: Mike's going to the store.

Example 2: This looks like Mike's bike.

Or would example 2 be; This looks like Mikes bike. Or; This looks like Mikes' bike.
