for me I cant connect sometime because the IP address assigned to the Pi changes ,even though it plugged in to the same cable , if you already have the pi booted up to find ip open terminal window and type in ,Sudo ifconfig

Forgot to mention, I remote into my Pi a lot. I run multiple monitors and just use one for the Pi RDP. Then I can look at the tutorial I'm following on one screen and do it on the other. You can even have something open and running on the Pi while remoted in. The screen doesn't blank out like a Windows PC does when you remote in.

You can connect by device name too I think, don't remember what the Pi's network name is though. I only get that every once in a while. I just try the next number up or down for the last number in the IP address. My router likes to give the same device the same IP address. I use Wifi for my breadboard setup, that's the only one I remote into. It's the only one I move around the house or outside in the summer. My KODI setup uses a wired connection.

jack, what kind of router do you have? You should read about assigning static ip on your devices. All you need is the Mac address of any device like the pi and use that to assign static ip to it on your router settings.
This way the same IP address will be used by the device all the time.

    From my tweak sheet.

    Enable Remote log in
    Run Config
    sudo raspi-config

    8. Advanced Options
    A4 SSH enable
    Finish
    Then
    1.Open a terminal window
2.Type the following command "sudo apt-get install xrdp"
3.If promoted enter your password (the default is "raspberry")
    4.Type "Y" and press enter.
5.This is now installing xrdp onto your Pi which is the software we are going to use for the remote desktop connection. Wait for it to complete.
6.Restart your Pi. We are going to check that xrdp is going to start up automatically.
7.When your Pi has booted to the command prompt look for [ ok ] Starting Remote Desktop Protocol server : xrdp sesman. This shows you that xrdp is installed and automatically starting up on start up of your Pi
8.The last step is to make a note of the IP address of your Pi which should also be displayed on the start up
Alright, I'll give that a try.

Step 8.. I spent so much time trying to figure out how to do this yesterday that I have my ip adress memorized! I think all Pi ip's are the same except for the last two digits. I may be wrong though.

Sudo ipconfig , the router sets the IP address. What the router gives out are private IP addresses and are very similar across all router brands. Usually 192.168.0.xxx or 192.168.1.xxx If you run ipconfig/all from a command prompt window in Windows it will show you all the info for that PC. The default gateway IP is the IP address of the router, type that into the address bar of IE and you'll get the login screen for your router. usually its http://192.168.0.1

I just figured out how to connect it to my NAS on my home network.

I remember I have a second router (access point) in my home theater bench and I was able to connect it wired. Now it can play anything from my NAS.
