Power Cycling the Modem and Wireless Router

Does power cycling the modem and router increase your internet speed?

Theoretically, I have a 60 Mbps plan from Charter Communication, but the actual speed ranges from 15 to 20 Mbps.

Beside the suboptimal speed, I have no other problem with my internet connection.

Does routine power cycling make sense for me?

You shouldn't have to "routinely" power cycle. It basically causes the equipment to reestablish a connection, and sync with the channels it uses. If there were a bad channel, one power cycle should do it. If there were a hardware fault, even intermittent, that could require "routine" power cycling. Do you find your speed slowing, and a power cycle restores it?

As far as advertised speeds, yours is far enough under what is advertised to look into. Your ping time is not unreasonable, suggesting that line quality may not be an issue. You can run the pingtest site as well to see what it reports (assuming you have java).

Pingtest.net - The Global Broadband Quality Test

Your first inquiry would be to your isp, questioning why you are not getting the speeds you are paying for. They may have the ability to analyze your connection. If they see no issue (or just do a tap dance, blame your modem, etc.), you might look into another DNS server. It is likely you may not be using the fasted server available. Even using Googles DNS server can often be quicker.

    GRC's

This benchmark can find the quickest server for you. Seems more complicated that it is

Is this a wired connection, or wifi? If wifi, do you have the ability to test wired? That could show you if your problem lies with wifi signal. Charter actually has a page for speed issues

Why You Probably Arenre Paying For (and How to Tell)

I am lucky to get at, or slightly better than advertised speeds. You should definitely pursue this through your isp. A Guy
