I thought some versions of Linux were enabling UEFI Capabilities, but I'm not sure. You could run Linux in VMWare or Hyper V too. They say you can't do it, but when switching over, I had this machine booting a UEFI OS and a MBR OS. Don't ask me how. I would have to play with the settings to figure it out gain.
Yeah, I'm sure that some of the better ones will eventually support UEFI, but I just don't want to take the chance of limiting myself. Measure twice, cut once.

Simrick, I will help you out if I can. I'm more of a hardware person than anything else, really. I posted the suggestions before I saw your budget post. But, I would definitely go with an i7 if you are doing a lot of rendering and things like that. An i5 will still do it, but will take much longer to do it.
Yes, I think the i7 is a must...especially if I end up using the computer as long as I've used my last one...

Budgets are just a starting point anyway. Nobody builds a computer within budget. I never have.
Ha! Well, you don't have my budget to deal with!

Give VMWare a shot, just to play with. Also, I think the options of UEFI or MBR were for OEM builders. I am not aware of a retail board that doesn't have that option. Just realize that an i7 is close to half of you budget.

I would like to give VMWare a shot - I just don't have a system that could handle it yet!

    Speed kills:

    1. as fast as hard drive as you get

    2. as much memory as you can put in it, wouldn't even consider anything under 16GB

besides the above,... your machine looks spec'd out nicely.

    have fun building it :)

Simrick, this is a little better. The problem was, if you looked at the first list you will see they didn't have quotes for the PSU I picked, so it is not included in the price. I changed a few things around but the CPU, MB and ram are the same. What dropped the price the most is the graphics card.

Extra memory doesnt make much difference unless you need it. I run 16gb in my work laptop, but only because I run virtual machines on it. Otherwise, no benefit to me.

That looks good,. I have a friend of mine who has one. He is a gamer and was not expecting very much from it. He said he was very impressed and it was much better than he thought.
