I've seen some SteamPunk systems that use an old typewriter for input. Pretty cool looking stuff.

I learned to type on the old Remington and Underwood typewrites. Until one uses one you have not idea of key travel and pressure. If they weren't kept clean and lubricated they even got worse.
Going from them to a IBM bouncing ball was quite a learning curve.
Believe it or not but back in the day they taught typing in high school.

I don't know how the guy got that old typewriter to do the computer things but I do want one.

If you look at the one Bunnyj posted, it looks like the keyboard key caps were replaced with the typewriter keys. You can see the switches under the keys.

The old typewriter likely has micro switches added in the linkages somewhere. Down underneath where their hard to see. Add a little more electronics and its a keyboard replacement.

In typing class we had the underwood's, and to think we could type upwards of eighty words a minute. . .

    Yes 80 wpm.
I never could but I seen some that could. The typewriter would sound like a machine gun and a boom when the carriage return was used.

Oh they were fun times, I think our school had Imperial, Olivetti and Underwood, I mainly used an Imperial. Once you learn to touch type on one of those you never forget.

I've seen many IBM Type M Keyboards used as the base for SteamPunk keyboards.
