Why is modern windows so awful?

I am a lifelong windows users. Going back to windows 3.1. And every version of windows since then(but a few) have been an overall improvement to the windows platform.

I remember when 95 came out; I was mesmerized by the start button, because of how it made computers so much easier to use for the technologically illiterate like myself.

Windows 98 and 98se were marked improvements to the windows 95 experience.

Windows 2000 was the best of what I call the classic windows experience.

Windows XP was okay. But it took years for it to hit its stride. And when it did vista was on the horizon.

Vista was broken because of driver support. And by the time it was fixed. Windows 7 was released.

Windows 7 is the ultimate, the perfect version of windows. Because every version of windows after windows 7 has only gotten worse and worse.

Windows 8 did not have a start menu. And the UI was ugly. It looked like a child's toy.

Windows 8.1 was too little too late.

Windows 10 is where my contempt really begins. The UI is even worse than 8. It's unergonomic. Everything feels purposefully out of place and put somewhere with no care or thought put into it. Everything is relabeled in a way that makes no sense. Ads in the start menu. It's slow as hell. When I updated my windows 7 to 10. I noticed a huge downtick in performance. Boot and overall response were slower. Keep in mind this was on the exact same hardware as my win 7 install. But what really pisses me off is the constant windows update. No. I dont want to download pointless updates that completely disable my machine for hours on end.

I have not used windows 11 much. But it's even worse than 10. The UI is even worse. Both aesthetically and from a user experience standpoint. I cant even move my task bar where I want it to be.

It feels like windows is no longer windows. It's a shallow imitation of what windows used to be. What happened to windows?

Because of the above. I have a windows 7 machine that I keep around. Just because it doesn't piss me off. I dont game at all. I only do word and excel.

P.S. No I am not a macintosh or linux user. I detest them both for different reasons.

You are entitled to your opinion.

Frankly Windows 7 is a pile of camel dung now in my opinion - crappy driver support, no ability to native mount isos, no secure boot, cannot run Hyper-.V properly, awful printer support, outdated text based bootloader, task manager never worked properly half the time. Its antivirus support was so bad, you have to rely on 3rd party tools. Many modern programs no longer run on W7, to say least of it being a security risk.

Windows 11, all above remedied plus extras like file explorer and notepad with tabs, persistant sandbox, crappy control panel mostly no longer needed.

If all you use OS is for word and excel as you say, your actual OS interactions are pretty much bare minimum anyway.

New young devs, who want something different, so they ignore practicality, functionality in order to hype it.
Like the round corners on flat monitors, which makes no sense and they create artifacts like this:

Maybe I should get a fitting CRT monitor for Windows 11.

as mentioned , that's just your opinion and of course you are entitled to it
    now here's my opinion:
    i had win95 , 98 , 2000
i had win XP and at the time is was the bomb probably cause i wasn't used to anything better ?
then moved to win 7 and then that was the bomb lol
skipped win 8 altogether and went to Linux (cause we all can agree 8 was a huge flop)
then came back to win 10 and really , it's the best win version by far (using PC like an average Joe doing average Joe stuff)

but that is just my opinion

    Win 10 and 11
       #5

I initially hated Windows 10 because of the clunky UI. It just didn't look as nice and polished as Win 7. Win 7 had a very organic look about it that I liked. I skipped Win 8 and 8.1 altogether after trying it for a few weeks. I hated the new interface.

Performance-wise, I feel that Win 10 is pretty snappy and 11 is even better for what I use my machine for. I can do without the adverts everywhere though. That's really the only thing I don't like about Win 10 and 11.

And to the OP: I see that you hate updates. Would you rather that MS not update Windows and leave huge security holes and bugs in it?

Why modern windows is so awful...
Bill gates stepped down as chairman of the Microsoft board in February 2014... He knew win10 that was in planing stages would suck, so he didn't want to be blamed for it. *LOL*

    I started with MS-dos 1987.
    win1 + 2... not so interesting
win3.1 + 3.11 Fun and exciting as it was graphical with a mouse.
win95. Fun and unstable like a armed bomb.
win98.. Better then 95, but still not good.
win98SE.. loved it.. But a bit to unstable.
    win-ME.. a terror/nightmare. *LOL*
win2000 Best system ever made, stable and fast....... NT4 with 98se feel.. or how to express it non-technical.. *LOL*
Win-XP SP3 Darn i still miss that one some times... kind of still lightweight and it was more 3D design thinking of the look and feel.. and it was the last windows system that didn't grow over time and could grow out of the disk as Vista could.. even win7+8 could.
Vista.. Like win95.. unstable until win7 release, so i never used it
Win7 First OS with some kind of security.. really stable... and the last real windows.. But the search function really sucks, as in all OS's after XP... I had loved having the file search from XP embedded in win7 and newer..
win8 + 8.1.. more made for tablets and touchscreen solutions.. Still stable and with some 3rd party tool you could get the classic start menu back
Win10 Home+Pro.... Just crap in my world, as rolling release OS's is the worst kind out there when you need a stable office computer where your tweaks and settings is crucial for having a stable system... and all bloatware, and telemetry and.. yeah i said it with the first words.. just crap... You need to hack the darn OS if you want a stable Home/Pro on your PC
win10 LTSC.. now we talking... a really good system without all the crap... But looks as flat 2D design as windows 3.1. Goes for all win10 editions.. darn winXP looks like 3D heaven compare to win10..
win11 home+pro... just crap, same as win10 home and pro.... They did try to make win11 more secure... and on paper it is... In real world.. It still get hacked and infected..
win12 Home/Pro/Subscription... As the history goes, that all windows systems get worse.... i expect no less from win12. it will suck

as win7 is EOL and no longer get updates... Then the only good windows is using LTSC if you can get hold of the product keys... Otherwise.. Reshape windows server2022 in to desktop usage and get a really stable system with support to 2031.

It is more likely your tweaks is not system deep and therefore isn't effected by the big windows version up-rolls (19H, 20H, 21H, 22H).
When you rip out Cortana, Camera, Windows store etc, etc.. when a big version up-roll is, all that bloat goes back in to the system again and services get re-activated etc.. etc.
So your luck might be you accept windows, as is, out of the box install.
or.. you have blocked Version up rolls, so you still on an old version like 19H1 or something
