In Ontario no one pays yearly for "tags" Borg. Past election perk. Now they are talking we don't even have to go through the free yearly license renewal. Anything to get a vote. ( and there is no yearly maintenance check.)
Morning TC.
Time for me to start running.
Enjoy your Tuesday everyone.
They do that here in the UK too, but it's 40+ years to gain 'Historic Vehicle (classic)' status. Not only do you not pay road tax, but it's exempt from the annual MoT testing too. My Mini is registered as a 'classic'.

That's nice, but truthfully, I can see an older car lasting 40+ years whereas you have to wonder about today's cars.
I'm guessing MOT is where they do an emissions test on the car? They do that in CA as well as a few other states, you have to go in every 2 years, they shove a sensor in your tailpipe and if it doesn't pass, depending on the age of the car, you have to pay up a certain amount of money to get it fixed as well as possible. Then after the fix, you get to go back to the testing station, show them the cert the mechanic give you, they run the test again & then you can finally get your tags.
More than that, it's a full road safety test - brakes, suspension, steering, corrosion - the lot. Fail on any one and it's illegal to drive the car on the roads.

They don't go into all of that at an emission station, all they worry about is how much pollution the car is spewing out.
Although they did ask me if everything was working fine. I think that's as far as they go.
New cars are not exempt in CA at least, when I was there some folks were removing their catalytic converters or putting dummy ones on the car, getting rid of it was supposed to help with the performance or gas mileage. Something like that.
