    Favorite Sci-Fi book or series

Post your favorite Sci-Fi book or book series here, one per post please.

Try to keep in Title by Author Publish date format if you can please then you can discuss it a bit below that.

One of my favorites is Cities in flight by James Blish 1950 - 1962

A four book series: The whole concept is of earth cites becoming Okies or wanders, looking for work throughout the galaxy and NYC is the focus of the stories.
Spindizzies are the engines that drive the cities through space. If you like hard Sci-fi give these a try.

Followed by the Dune Series - Frank Herbert - close contender for Asimov's position.

    I loved the first three,

    .
    Dune (1965)
    • Dune Messiah (1969)
    • Children of Dune (1976)

not so much the rest. I have not read the plethora of prequels and sequels Brian Herbert and Kevin Andersen wrote

Yeah - they got a bit formulaic after God Emperor of Dune. I must admit I have not bothered with all the more recent books written by his son etc. I had no idea there were so many. These are just cashing in on name.

And how could I forget the legendary Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy Books - Douglas Adams.

After all, as it says below HHGTTG - Arthur Dent was - right 6*9 does equal 42!

I used to love the Stainless Steel Rat books by E E Doc Smith when many years younger (a pint of beer in UK was 10 new pence).

edit - correction author was Harry Harrison - thanks @Bree.
