Squeeking computer chair

Greetings: I am 78 years old with a hearing problem. For the last five years I have been using a set of "professional" hearing aids which I did not find very effective from the get-go but was not allowed to return them for a refund. Recently I bought a set of in-ear hearing aids for $200 from Amazon and I discover that I never realized the world was so noisy. I also discovered that my computer chair made all kinds of noise every time I move around. I thought of spraying WD-40 on the moving under parts but my wife read an article somewhere that WD-40 after a while causes more problems than provides solutions. So I am asking if anyone has ever faced this situation and has used something equivalent to WD-40 without the potential future problems.

I should be very thankful for any ideas, suggestions, opinions, advice, gossip about a solution. The chair is like brand new and it would be a pity to throw it away just because of a loud squeak.

Not sure where you read that information but WD-40 is a suitable lubricant for this sort of application. 3 in 1 oil or sewing machine oil are all good alternatives.

regular cooking oil is also a lubricant and can be used on these sorts of things

Thank you Malneb for your reply. My wife Googled WD-40 and read that warning in one of the entries. My WD-40 is some 10 years old, so I think I shall buy a fresh can later this morning and go to work on my chair. Thanks again and regards.

Try the good, old stuff.
It certainly doesn't hurt to check loose screws too...in the chair.

Or try the easiest way.....to pry a piece of paper into the area where the squeeking occurs.

Thank you very much, NTN, for reminding me of Amazon. It has started snowing again in Ottawa and TV says it should continue snowing till late in the afternoon. Annoying, don't like driving in snow any more. MVH.

Use a rag to back up the point to where you're spraying. It'll help to control overspray and runs.

• Place the rag behind the point you're going to spray and use short bursts.
• Make sure the can comes with one of those usually red nozzle straws. That'll help to pinpoint the spray.
• while your at it put a couple of shots on the pneumatic lift mechanism, that shiny thing that goes between the chair seat and wheels.

Just for an example, these are 7" long, I believe W-D's are 5", maybe 6".


The polyurethane bushings in my lyft chair chatter like crazy and I have to give' em a shot every couple of months and that's how I do it.
