Ah... I thought it might have been a reference to Grace Hopper.

    Good afternoon Keith.

You do know that Grace Hopper never invented COBOL? Her work pre-dates that - she invented the concept of the complier, writing the world's first in 1952. And it was from this that COBOL was developed in 1959.

    Afternoon Bree.

Interestingly there's a shortage of COBOL programmers right now. Turns out ATM's & other older devices run on that language & since it hasn't been taught in quite a while, there's now a demand with older programmers retiring.

Afternoon Bree. No I thought she invented it. You learn something new every day.

    Good morning Borg.

Well don't look at me, I never learned COBOL. At Uni all the students on engineering-based degrees (like me) were taught Fortran, the rest learned COBOL.

Looks like you could make a nice side-line in COBOL programming, according to Borg

Didn't think you would know it (would be a surprise if you did), hell I never even looked at the code for it.

But pretty funny (or sad depending on how you look at it) that an ancient language like that still runs so many machines. Of course my instructor a few years back at the college told me the older languages are more solid & less prone to errors then the new ones are.

I'm curious if they'll choose to upgrade the machines or if some of the colleges might start teaching it.

Read one article about a year or 2 ago about some young kid that learned it from a friend of his Dad's & he said he was pretty darn busy with the constant requests for service coming in.
