I code from my PC and or Pi using the Thonny IDE. As we know the code is run on the actual Micro Controller. I never knew you could do the same thing with a Pi though?
My brother in law is big on VS coding. He worked for the Canadian Government coding up GUI type stuff for them. I have zero skills with VS.
There was something Microsoft put out for a Raspberry Pi that was VS studio based. Dammed if I can remember what it was though? Very limited and I struggled to get anywhere, and just gave up. I would have pushed on but it wasn't what I thought it was when I went down that road. ;)

Python was the go to for Raspberry Pi stuff when I bought my first one, so that's what I learned to use. And most of my add on displays are Pimoroni SPI Breakout Garden so I go with their drivers.
I have Thonny and Python on both my PC and Pi also.

At least on the PC I found the best way to have the latest version of Python and Thonny on the PC is to:
    1. Install Python
    2. Update Pip
    3. Install Thonny

Currently I have Python 3.12.1 and Thonny 4.1.4 on my PC and Python 3.11.2 and Thonny 4.1.4 on my Pi 5. I plan to update Python on my Pi also when I get a chance.

Are you talking about this? Visual Studio Code on Raspberry Pi

Before I retired I programmed using Visual Studio on a PC. Now I run the Visual Studio Community 2022 Edition on my PC.

@MisterEd No it wasn't that. It was Windows 10 IoT.

Wasn't really Windows 10 though. Just a very basic GUI you added too with VS code.

Well, I finally got up the gumption today to rotate my Pi screen in my Pimoroni screen case, and it is now right side up without having to turn the whole Pi upside down and have it slanted on my desk all weird. It took some fiddling, drilling, filing and screwing around, but I finally got it to work ok. I have no idea why Pimoroni would design a screen holder that put the screen upside down and then make it so you can't easily rotate the screen in the frame. I know that you can rotate the screen on a Pi in the configuration files, but it didn't seem to work with Bookworm at all. At least, I couldn't make it work.

At least now I don't have to print an enclosure for my status display. I can just concentrate on coding it and making it work right, but that is a whole other can of worms.

While I was fiddling around today, I fitted a new heat sink and fan to the Pi. I got it from DigiKey and it's pretty darn nice. It only cost me $15 CAD. I bought that and a GPIO riser and Pi perfboard to be able to hook the serial lines into the Pi. The riser is a tall one and I think it should fit even with the fan on the Pi. The fan is extremely low profile so I think it should fit ok with a perfboard, though I may have to use an extra low profile GPIO header for clearance. We'll see.

    Here is the fan:

BTW, happy new year to all of you Pi Heads.

It wasn't just Pimoroni, a lot of the early cases for the 7 inch DSI screen were orientated that way. It was done so the power jacks etc, were pointed up, for easy access. I'm not making excuses, this issue also caused me grief. Just an observation.

For me, with the first one I bought. The boot screen was upside down, and the flip didn't happen until the Desktop GUI was loaded. And just for fun. they seem to change the rotate function with each new release of Pi OS.

@Catnip, this is one of many reasons I own a Dremel Tool. And keep adding to its attachments. Cutting wheels, sanding drums, very small drills, ball mills etc. The hardest part for me is, think before you act.

Wow. That is a seriously good price for a reflow station. I paid over $4K CAD for the one at work. Granted, it also has tweezers, but still.

Congrats on the shipment of your Pi 5. I can't wait to see what you do with it.

Should be more than adequate for what I'll be using it for.

Just had a look see and my Pi 5 "NVMe Base + 500GB SSD" now shows as Picked, Preparing for shipping.

I think I might have to get one as well for home use. I am running into more and more SMD components on things that I am fooling around with.

I am going to get brained for this one, but don't worry, I won't throw you under the bus for giving me the idea.
