OS for older Intel Atom D425KT

    Hello friends,

I have a small one-board computer which is built around Intel Atom D425KT. It has 2-4 GB of ram (depends on how many RAM chips are still alive), 250GB HDD. I had Win 7 on it a while back, but it was on SSD. So it performed OK. I also had Ubuntu on the same PC, also on SSD. I've now moved the SSD to my mainstream desktop PC to install programs/apps. So now, this old machine has only 250GB HDD.

Can you please recommend a good and light operating system that will run fine on this PC? It could be Linux or other OS too, just that it should have UI similar to Windows.

    Thanks in advance.

    lubuntu | lightweight, fast, easier

Lubuntu is a lightweight Ubuntu that is aimed at PCs with low specs. It isn't exactly like Windows, but its easy to figure out.

Thank you for your suggestion. I have used Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Elementary OS and Puppy Linux. I'm fairly comfortable with using Linux. Installation and configuration is the part where I get stuck as I'm not aware of the various commands. I will try out Lubuntu.

Finally, I installed Win XP SP3 on the machine. The OS is dated, but runs OK. Linux ran much better, I ran Linux Mint 11 on it a few weeks back. Linux Mint 11 is EOL now.
But I do not have another Linux X32 ISO with me, and cannot download as I'm hitting bandwidth limits.

So now, I'm letting Win XP install a bit of updates/security patches. There are some issues though with some programs hogging CPU %. Working through them at the moment.

    @him

Xubuntu is so far my favorite over other distros. I think Xubuntu is easier to configure than it is in Linux mint xfce. I am still learning.

These are both small download. The updates should be as well.

Xubuntu can use Lubuntu and ubuntu software center but they will need to be installed. Most software from the software centers will work on Xubuntu. It hit & miss with Linux mint my experience.

    Xubuntu 15.04

    Get Xubuntu

xubuntu-15.04-desktop-i386.iso it is only about 970mb in size

The Linux Mint Blog Xfce released!

1.4 gb download for Linux Mint xfce

512MB RAM (1GB recommended for a comfortable usage).
9GB of disk space (20GB recommended).
Graphics card capable of 800×600 resolution (1024×768 recommended).
    DVD drive or USB port.

But if you still want to use windows xp sp3. There is an unofficial windows service pack 4 at softpedia website.

@groze - I will definitely dual boot this PC with lubuntu or xubuntu as per suggestions.
    Thanks again for the details.

PS: Checked the screenshots for Xubuntu and it looks great. Will be trying it soon when I get time from work and home/chores.
