    Fry's Electronics is gone

Just read online that Fry's is no more.

I haven't lived near enough to one for 20 years for that to make a personal difference, but it's still the end of an era. I knew of no other big box store that had anywhere near as much PC stuff.

They were also known for their very low sale prices on audio/video gear.

    Requesat in pace, Fry's.

    Surprised they lasted this long.

Did they have very deep pockets? Or are there that many that refuse to buy online?

Are they gone totally or just getting out of bricks and mortar locations?

I've had a store within 15 miles, but have had no need to go there in at least 15 years.

Once the brick and mortar stores are gone... the prices will skyrocket.
    Some etailers have already begun.

    Could be.

The barrier to entry (cost) of any sizable online retailing operation is very high......so I suspect we shall continue to see more social, cultural, and political opposition to the BIG A...........counterbalanced by whatever coin Bezos can distribute to our masters.

The only thing that I like about the brick and mortar stores is the ability to go into the location and actually see, touch and inspect the device before I buy it.

For something like a hard drive, ssd, etc....i don't care about seeing it. But for other things, like a keyboard, mouse, monitor, case, etc.....it's nice to get a look at it.

As others have observed, the overhead costs of brick-and-mortar are just too high in a business where pennies make a difference. I'm sorry to see them go, and I still remember my first-ever trip to Fry's in Sunnyvale in 1987. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. But I do understand why they're going... These days, I buy from Newegg most of the time, but will "defect" to other vendors when price differerentials of more than 10% pop up (most on CPUs, it seems).
    Requiescat in pace, indeed.

I used to go to Fry's in Indianapolis. Two years ago their shelves were looking pretty bare and I figured they were on their way out. Sad to see them go for sure. I used to love computer fairs back in the day too but those days are gone as well.

The Fry's grocery chain was, at one time, owned by the same family. I doubt that there was any cross-funding, but...
