Ok, Now I understand a lot better. Thanks for explaining it for me. Never thought of using your method ....but I still prefer my method as I have everything hooked up now. Hot water heater, Well, furnace .....everything except my computer room. As I don't run computer off a generator. Most likely I could, but that makes me nervous so i don't. I also don't use my microwave .
This new generator could power anything in the house, just at this point in time I am being real careful.
Your method works good also. Mine method works to as I do not want to keep a generator on standby for 5 or more years and never use it because the power is never off long enough to fire it up except for Hurricanes but brief one to four-hour power outages are annoying. Most UPS's do not like the generators that are on the market today as the 60 HZ is not stable enough for them the UPS need it to be +- 3 HZ before they will accept the line power as good and will stay on battery power which does not last long on the small battery's they have.

I have chosen the off grid method so that I can have lights, entertainment, fans and microwave when I have a long power outage so far I have 10 KWH of battery which should give me 12+ hours of use before needing to charge the battery.

I have my generator in its own shed / building. and it can set for years without being run that often. my old generator is around 17 years old and still runs like the day I bought it.....just needs normal maintenance ....start it up once in a while let it run for a few mins ....but I end up losing my power at least once a year..sometimes just for a short time.
