I made an error in judgement yesterday - I saw an offer for Paint Shop Pro Ultimate at £50 with a package of extras so thought I'd revisit my past and give it a try ... Big Mistake - It would not install the majority of the addons and messed up other stuff just for the sake of it.

I used the software years ago when it was developed by a small independent company , JASC, and it met a lot of the graphics needs of a small business so was looking forward to a little nostalgia ...

Of course Corel now own the name after swallowing JASC some years ago - and what a dog they've made of it

Most of the auxiliary addon programs and all the "Creative content" refused to even install on my Windows 10 machine - Corel support's only suggestion was to try creating a new user account to run the software or reinstall windows - No thank you.

The user interface of the main program, Paint Shop Pro, now follows the corel latest design, white and grey drab which is only broken up by the Spam for their other products which take up a major part of the User Interface,

OK I could live with the spam if this was a trial or Shareware, (as the original PSP package from JASC was), but this is on a paid for top of the range "Ultimate" package that was fully registered with Corel.

There were even random pop-up spammed adverts when none of the corel packages were running

And they registered their software to my Microsoft account without my permission

The install took a while as I had to install multiple items and in some cases multiple times, but it never fully installed so was useless and I soon took the best course and forensically removed all traces of the package, and requested a full refund which was accepted (the only thing that appeared to work well - this was handled by a third party company not Corel which may explain why it was efficient - will be interesting to see how long it takes to be refunded to my account.

I used to use Corel software extensively of many years but this experience and the issues I had with CorelDraw a year or two ago, which also ended up removed from my systems, means that I will not be using their software again
Ran a trial years ago because I couldn't afford Photoshop PS6 at the time. Wasn't impressed. Also used Corel Draw which was ok but doesn't do much more than Inkcape (free) and their bitmap editor bundled with Corel Draw is awful.

The more serious things for me, and I admit that this could be coincidence or due to the faffing around and jumping through hoops that I had to do when trying to get things working, was that my image backup never ran overnight and when I came online this morning, [ just involves switching on the monitor so should not have a major effect ], my bluetooth was not working - not great as I use a bluetooth keyboard - but a reboot cured that.

I used to use CORELDraw for a lot of mockups/designs for the publicity department and graphics inserts for use in user manuals so needed something that gave professional results with my amateur skills

I have the "New" suite of apps from Serif - Affinity suite which although the Designer app is not as polished as the old CORELDraw, it's being actively developed and is getting there

The pricing is also much better than Corel or Adobe so it may be worth a look at I have the full suite which is fully integrated (single file type under the skin)

Worth thinking about. I get by with the PS photography plan atm.

I have the photography plan too, but still find a vector package useful, and I am not going to pay adobe £50 a month for Illustrator

The Affinity apps are also currently half price due to covid and have a 90 day trial as standard

The last I used was Photoshop 7 and all its add-ons, I can't remember which OS I was using at the time though, I don't use anything now as I don't take enough photos to make it worthwhile to pay for a special program anymore.

Joan, there are a few options you could look at that are free Open Source - Gimp is a photoshop alternative and there is Darktable an alternative to Lightroom

It's always useful to keep something on your system - just in case the perfect phone shot come along - of your grandkids or something like that and you want to get prints made

Thanks for the information, Nigel. It's kind of ironic, but I was thinking of going back to see what Paint Shop Pro is like now. My only complaint with it before was that it was slow, slow, slow and I was hoping it would be a bit speedier. I'm glad I hadn't gotten around to getting it now!

I also used Paint Shop Pro from its JASC days, suitable for the times. I got PSP X2 as part of a WordPerfect bundle, haven't installed it yet as I don't have a pressing need. Most of what I need is easily handled by Paint/MSPaint and Windows Photo Viewer. Last couple days I've been getting rid of old software, either things not needed or that can't run on x64 Windows 10 [about 20 lbs. of discs]. I also like Serif PagePlus for posters but the one project I did every year has been usurped by someone else and haven't decided yet on Affinity. I've kept WordPerfect on my computers since my first in '92 with WP for Windows 5.1 although I did take the Community Education programs for WP for DOS and MS-DOS 5, great benefit after doing the correspondence study I had to for work. I haven't upgraded Microsoft Office since installing 2013.

They do provide a full limited time Trial of the standard edition if anyone want to risk it for nostalgia's sake, I did not go this route as they had the special offer running and I did not want to risk missing it, the standard edition may be worth a look and it may be a better installer though I doubt it given my experience, At least Cleverbridge, the financial company that handles the sale were efficient in the refund to me -

I received the first email reply from Corel Support after the refund was complete
