That was good. It's not only a crime that so many people can't spell, use proper grammar, etc., most of them don't care and will actually become angry if you try to correct them. saying it doesn't matter. They don't realize their credibility suffers from their improper grammar, etc.

Not everyone has had the benefit of a superior education. I'm not speaking of those who just use lazy practices, but those who perhaps did not have the best teachers. Many had to work at a young age, had learning difficulties, etc. I do not judge a person based on their proper use of grammar. I judge someone on how they treat others, and the help that they provide. I may cringe a bit at the incorrect usage of there, their, etc., but it does not define a person to me. A Guy

I'm not just referring to people on forums. Many of those posters are older people who grew up in a time when they were more likely to enter the workforce than they were to continue in school. Others are from countries where English isn't their first language, although those people often have a better command of English than native speakers. However, people from English speaking countries have no excuse for poor basic grammar, spelling, etc. Those skills are taught (albeit not always learned) early on, before High School.

Sadly, in the USA, public education often is a joke. I've seen dozens of job applications filled out by High School graduates that made me wonder how on Earth they managed to graduate (actually, I know why but won't waste time explaining it here; besides, it gets too political at times). Many applications filled out by college students looked like something a second grader filled out. Guess which applications went to the bottom of the pile?

Actually, people often have good excuses for poor grammar, spelling, etc. That is my point. Regardless of why they don't have these skills, they have worked all their lives, raised families, contributed to society, and now to these forums. It is a small thing compared to much greater issues. I will not look down on anyone because of how well educated they appear to be. A Guy

" However, people from English speaking countries have no excuse for poor basic grammar, spelling, etc."

I am English, born, bred and brought up in England. I live in Denmark, where English is learned at school.

Your comment lends itself to criticism. I have no problem conversing freely with my peers in this country, There grammar lets them down quite a lot when they break out in print. This is, in no remote way, connected with there language ability.

I am certain they would find problems with my danish efforts.
Guy is 100% correct on all counts.

"those who are suppose be educated."

    supposed to

    "correct them. saying it"

That should be a comma. Are you with me?

Yes, there should be a comma between "them" and "saying" instead of a period. That was a typographical error I didn't catch. Most likely, Lee's error was also a typo since it only involved a missing letter. But how about your use of "there" when it should be "their"? In fact, you did it twice, convincing me you don't know the difference between the two. There (not their) is no excuse for that from someone who claims to have been "born, bred, and brought up in England". Also, I fail see what your breeding habits have to do with this conversation, unless you were referring to your parents breeding before you were born instead of you breeding after birth as your comment actually states (conceived, born, and brought up in England would have been more accurate).

While we are at it, "danish" should be Danish. Also, the comma in "I have no problem conversing freely with my peers in this country, There grammar lets them down quite a lot when they break out in print." should be a period, unless you meant it to be a semicolon, in which case, "There" should have been spelled (or spelt, considering the side of the pond where you are living) with a lower case "t" (I already covered the misuse of "There" when it should have been "their").

You have done a wonderful job of helping to prove my points, especially the one about people who get angry when poor spelling, grammar, syntax, etc. is criticized are usually the ones who make those mistakes.

LOL. Yes. But I wasn't commenting on others poor grammar in the opening thread - I was merely (trying) to point out cross language problems.
Yes, believe it or not, I do know the difference between their and there. Thank you for your observation. I write hastily and the spelling corrector did not, of course, point that one out.

In the country where I have lived, now, for 20 years, I may have slipped. Danish, would, in any case, have been more familiar to me as dansk. (small letters.)

Maybe you have missed the point. Even those who regard their grammar abilities as superior to others, can make mistakes. - I certainly do, whether they be "typos" or other.

FWIW. "Born and Bred" a well known and well used colloquial term.

    "born and bred
if you were born and bred in a place, you were born and grew up in that place and have the typical character of someone who lives there "

In South Africa we have 11 official languages. Its ridiculous to expect everyone to know each language perfectly. So pick a language, learn it til you've nailed it and know enough of the rest to get by. In my home we have English as our main language, followed by equal portions of German and Afrikaans. I know a bit Xhosa too. Should I be ridiculed/condemned by people speaking Venda, Sotho, Zulu, sign language, etc? Of course not. Here we respect people's cultures, which includes their language.

What rather bothers me is when I see kids write something (eg. homework) as if they were typing on a cell phone. U no wt I mean? Tht I reli h8.
