Yep, when we lived in SoCali, they were illegal, but there were people that could get them for you...for a huge amount of money compared to what they cost in states where they are legal. Our friend had one & when they told us what they paid we were shocked.Lol!
Here in California ferrets are not legal as the fear is if they escape and breed, they will pose a risk to California's rare native animals and birds. Mind you domesticated ferrets would likely not thrive in the wild. Hawaii is the other state where they are illegal. Being an island, there reasons make more sense

Strangely, my 18 FT Burmese Python was legal...but not ferrets.
Oh yeah, & Camel Spiders...they were sold in reptile shops...

As most of the folks here know, I've owned and loved ferrets. The reason I no longer have them is that their life span is so short (5 to 6 years) and they tend to worm their way into my heart so deeply that when they die, it's almost as hard as losing a human loved one.Lol!

Domesticated ferrets can survive in the wild only if conditions are right. Maybe the mid-western states. Mostly in zones that hardly ever freeze. I think.
Black Footed Ferrets are native to California and mid-western states and are almost extinct. It's illegal to own Black Footed Ferrets due to the fact that they're endangered.
What Is The Difference Between Wild Ferrets and Domesticated Ferrets?
