Vista runs beautifully on ivybridge mobos. It can be happily used as a main system for those that wish to.

IMHO, a lot of those older operating systems will be just fine on "period' hardware. Or older hardware. Issues usually happen with hardware released after "it" was abandoned by Microsoft. As always YMMV.
It can actually be fun to revisit older operating systems. Especially if you liked the experience the first time around.
