If you format in ExFat both Linux & Windows can use it.

It is a tar file and the usb stick is too slow formatted in ext4 I will use ssd's for media for backups as mint reports 46 minutes to save the file. It only took 5 minutes on the SSD same port.

So it likely was the format, yes USB sticks seem dead slow compared to SSD's.

Yep it was the format that was the problem it was 12 GB when I aborted it the SSD had a transfer rate of 121 MB a sec the USB stick slowed down to 14 MB a sec.
