And . . . another chicken gang story . . .
After the rummage sale and lunch, I was home at around 1:00 PM, so I checked the nest for eggs. Only one, for the second day in a row, and only two the day before that. And, worst of all, L'eggs was missing! What the heck!? I saw her just yesterday!
So, I "gathered" my one egg, gave the chickens some grain and left the pen. Had someone come in and stolen one of my hens? Well, I was thinking, at least they got the one that wasn't laying any more. I walked toward the house and something made me go back and look once again, and more carefully this time.
I made the rounds of the 18' x 24' pen, then looked carefully inside the chicken house. There, in the deepest, darkest corner I saw L'eggs. Fully expecting to find a dead chicken, she was alive and well, and sitting on several eggs she'd conned the rest of the chickens into laying into her brood-space. Yep, she wants to be a mama, so I left her be. Although I'm not at all sure the eggs are fertile. After all, Daddy Roo is an octogenarian, or something like that . . . an advanced age to be a father.
Later this evening, when Cyndi gets home from picking up APA packets, I'll go up and get several of her Coco Maran eggs and give those to L'eggs for hatching.
So, the lost chicken is found and hopefully, somewhere between my birthday September 4th and the 6th I should have some baby chickens!
