I have a 64 gig Hyper X USB thumb drive I'd like to boot directly from on my Pi 4B. My 8 gig will be a desktop PC setup. I have plans to install Mu and the Arduino IDE to code my Arduino's and Micro Bit's etc from my Pi. Dual monitors would be nice too, now that that is doable without a lot of fuss.

What projects do people have that would even take advantage of a Pi with 8GB of RAM? None of the projects I've use Pis for would benefit from that much RAM, which is why I'm not in any hurry to buy an 8GB model.

Personally, I'm much more interested in the new Beta feature that allows booting from USB and eliminating the micro SD card.
In the blog they said the memory controller in the Raspberry 4 already supported up to 16GB RAM but they did not have a memory chip larger that 4GB until recently. It looks like Linux is rapidly moving away from 32-bit support toward 64-bit. The Raspberry Pi Foundation is well aware of that. They have said that they would rather stick with supporting only one version of Raspbian but circumstances dictate that they will have to support both 32-bit and 64-bit Raspbian from now on.

Five years from now I think the Raspberry Pi OS (64-bit) will be the main operating system used with Pis. The 32-bit version may still be around but only in a secondary roll with less support.

I have a Raspberry Pi 3B+ (1GB) and a Raspberry Pi 4B (4GB). I will wait for the new Raspberry Pi OS (64-bit) to come out of Beta until I try it. I have a couple SSDs I would like to use with the Pis but am waiting for built-in boot from them to be supported.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has said that the new Raspberry Pi OS (64-bit) will work on both Raspberry Pi 3s and 4s. They have not said how much RAM is required. I suspect that Pis with more RAM will work better.

64 bit will not run on the Pi Zero so 32 bit is here to stay for the foreseeable future I would think. They "say" they have no plans to stop manufacturing the Pi Zero any time soon. And at that price point, I don't see it being upgraded to support 64 bit. Especially with the limited Ram it has. I have a couple of A+'s that as far as i know won't run 64 bit either. A lot of the older Pi versions can not run 64 bit operating systems.

In the 32 bit user land, you can still use the full 8 gig etc, but a running process can only use (address) up to 3 gig. Multiple processes can use all the ram but no single process can use more than 3 gig. With 64 user land you don't have that restriction, they can address more RAM. I would think for the average Joe 32 bit should be usable with no trade offs. It would only be special case scenario's where you'd be forced to go 64 bit.
Part of the 64 Beta release, IMHO, was to shut up the "why no 64 bit" protests on the Pi Foundation Forum.
I don't understand your comment. How can you use more than 4GB when the underlying O/S is only using 32-bit addressing which is limited to 4GB of addressable space? Of course there are ways around this because years ago I used computers that did that. I am not aware of any Raspberry Pi 32-bit O/S that uses any extension that extends memory access beyond 4GB.

Ubuntu stopped supporting 64-bit CPUs since April 2018. Ubuntu relented a little because of complaints from Steam and Wine communities and brought back some support for 32-bit. How long this lasts nobody knows.

Raspbian is based on the Debian Arm distribution. It is only a matter of time before even Debian stops support for 32-bit. When that happens even if a Raspbian 32-bit is available it will be based on an old version of Debian.

Windows 10 only supports 32-bit programs by having a special 32-bit emulation mode running under Windows 10 64-bit. Linux has less concerns for doing so.

In the future we will see two camps. People with more capable Pis with 2 or more GB RAM and those with less capable Pis with limited RAM. The first group will have and O/S that is more capable and up to date while the second will have an O/S that is stagnant and limited in future updates.

I deleted my other post due to not enough java in "my" system when I made it. I miss read something then miss interpreted it etc etc.

IMHO, the demise of 32 Linux (as pertains to the Pi) is being overstated. I personally don't think its going to fade to black as quick as some think. The Raspberry Pi isn't the only device using those 32 Arm SOC's.

EDIT: This was posted by a raspberry Pi Engineer on the Pi forum.

In the long term we'll keep both running at the same level for as long as is feasible. If the technology divides us we may have to switch to some long term stable solution. But I don't expect that to happen in the next few years.

And this is what I saw that sparked my other post.

You only need 64 if your process needs more than 3GB of memory, which is the limit in 32bit world. Of course, you can have multiple processes each using 3GB in 32 bit world, that works fine. Hence 32bit will work fine on the 4 and 8GB models, unless you have a specific need for >3GB in a single process.

Ah here we go, maybe I did get it right, from the blog.
8GB Raspberry Pi 4 on sale now at $75 - Raspberry Pi

Our default operating system image uses a 32-bit LPAE kernel and a 32-bit userland. This allows multiple processes to share all 8GB of memory, subject to the restriction that no single process can use more than 3GB. For most users this isn’t a serious restriction, particularly since every tab in Chromium gets its own process. Sticking with a 32-bit userland has the benefit that the same image will run on every board from a 2011-era alpha board to today’s shiny new 8GB product.

But power users, who want to be able to map all 8GB into the address space of a single process, need a 64-bit userland.

Still no sign of my Pimoroni order, they are going to resend me another one though. I got the order received e-mail today with $0 charge. Hasn't shipped yet though. This is the order that had the new Unicorn Mini in it.
My camera shipped May 14th so it could show up any day now. I'm thinking I'm more likely to see it some time next week though.
I would like to see some kind of official stand or add on to the official case to hold the camera and support it.

Even some type of PIBOW case / stand for the new camera from Pimoroni would be cool.
