ok ,thanks for the links ,will give that a go ..edit- i did the firmware , ran a bit cooler [high of 71 ,mostly was at a high 60 doing the 2 browsers open, multiple tabs playing youtube videos and doing facebook ,checking out some pi related groups ,I haven't found a good group yet ..old temp were mid to hi 70's doing the same sites before the update

I'm seeing about 70c with a browser open to one of my camera feeds. No fans running in that room. It is cooler in there today though, its only 21c ambiant.
we just got our power back at 7pm,it was off since Sat evening .....tea and cooked on a camp stove,,no Tv or internet,,,not good !
Ours was off for about 12 hours. Went off Saturday night back on Sunday morning around 10 AM. My step daughter was still out last night, she lives out Marion Bridge way.
Sorry to hear that guys. I can't even remember the last time our power was out, maybe 5-6 years ago or more.
I have a portable generator that can be used for backup that I've owned for 10 years. We once had the power out for 5-6 hours and it was starting to get dark so I got the generator out and started gassing it up to use it. However, the power came on right then so I've actually never used the generator for backup power.
Fan shim just arrived in the mail.
It won’t fit on the GPIO with the heatsink in place. Not and be anywhere near a reliable connection, it would be right at the end of the pins.
I put a booster header on the GPIO and plugged it into that. Spacing looks OK to me with the fan in the stock mounting position. I haven’t soldered anything yet. Just going to let it run and see how it works out. Software is installed and the daemon is setup.
The button will do a shutdown if its running, and a boot up if I leave it powered up. Fan stays on constant though after the Pi shuts down which is a bit of a bummer. I’ve ben told that is because I flashed a different boot loader into the firmware.
LED appears to be working too.
Might be a while before it hits 65c, its at 50c right now. Its in the shade.
Other than the fan not turning off when the Pi shuts down, everything appears to be working as advertised. I saw the LED go yellow, then orange, then Red. Then the fan turned on and ran until the temp went back down to 55c. Led then went green again.
I guess the next step is to go back to the stock boot loader. I think that going to break the on off button functionality. I guessing it will shutdown but won't boot up when the button is pressed.

I woke up to-day and had one look at all my Pile of Pi stuff sitting on the shelf and desk and said what the fugg,and that weird feeling i, felt when i was a kid and i did something wrong hit me ,big time , I think my crazy uncontrolled buying just sunk in ... time to take inventory,and keep a few things ,and selloff some things i know i'll never really learn to use correctly ...cpu temp up to 58c now ..
Mine would likely site around 60c not doing anything. Once I start running some stuff it just slowly creeps up. With the fan shim, when it hits 65 the fan turns on. Then when it goes back under 55 it turns off. Takes about 20 seconds. I have a Blinkt plugged in ontop of the fan shim. It works great at holding the fan shim in place. I don't think I'm going to solder the fan shim. Not unless it starts acting up. The Blinkt is running the CPU temperature example. The LEDs light up white though so I'll have edit it or make something up myself to get some meaninful colors in there. Its 8 RGB LED's, so each one is 10c. I'd like it to go Green, Yellow , Red, something like that.
