Yeah, they skimped and only used one resistor instead of two separate ones on the pins that negotiate the voltage to be used. USB C supplies that can supply more than 5V may not work at all. Apple stuff for instance.
The official Pi 4 power supply only ever puts out 5V, I don't think it even checks those other two pins on the USB C port? And the Pi 3 etc official supply should be fine through an adapter. I'll know in a couple of days as thats all I could get when I ordered my Pi 4. Phil is going to fix me up with an actual Pi 4 supply with the USB C plug. It will be Pimoroni's universal Pi 4 power supply or an official US Pi foundation Pi 4 power supply. It may be a while before I get it in my hands though.
I've been hanging out on the Pi Foundation Forums since the launch. Thats one of several issues reported. A fix for that issue, if they decide to fix it, means a board revision and a hardware update. I kind of think they will just leave it as is and tell you to use a supply that works.
All the other issues "they say" will and can be fixed with software, Buster updates. Except maybe the thermal issue. The new SOC gets Hot. It won't overheat, but performance will suffer because it will throttle back and down clock when it gets hot. A heatsink is mandatory IMHO, if your not going to add a cooling fan. I'm going to test out both. They claim they can mitigate some of it with a firmware update. The firmware on the Pi which can now be updated as its in an EEPROM. I'll believe that when I see it. Color me sceptical.

yeah , i think ill wait for awhile before i get a new Pi, as i don't really need one .even if i do really ,really want one
It will likely be a while before I get a second Pi 4. Christmas or my birthday. I've bought quit a few Pi's recently. 3A+'s mostly. More than enough of those kicking around now. And I got a second 3B+ not that long ago. My Pi 4 should be here any day now though.
