On Thursday, I went to the Sr. Center and discovered we'd been given two new computers (with what Belarc said were 8.1, but one turned out to be Windows 10) and the one our Genealogy instructor (Mary Louise) used was taken away! Oh, Crap! All her teaching files were on there!

So, we headed for the Director's (Sherry) office, but she wasn't there, so next day, we got to see her. We asked what had happened and explained the problem. Sherry called the IT man and while she was trying to explain the problem to him I finally asked if I could talk to him. They were on speakerphone, so, she said yes . . .

Since he and I talk the "same language" (computerese), I got the point across about trying to teach computers with three OSes. Then I asked him if he could bring back Mary Louise's computer and he said, sure. He'd be there in 20 minutes. I then asked if I could try to install Windows 10 on the three Windows 7 machines and he gave me permission! Woo Hoo!

He showed up with Mary Louise's Win 7 computer and proceeded to spend the afternoon with us, discussing genealogy and computers in general. When it was all said and done, I now have permission to upgrade the 8.1 machine to Windows 10, as well as all (now) four Windows 7 machines.

Friday morning, I tried one machine first . . . oh, my, I may have to go home and make a DVD, since the BIOS in this old machine won't allow for booting from a USB drive. I plugged the USB drive into the computer while it was running, told it to let me see what was on it, saw "setup.exe" and clicked on it. It could only tell me it couldn't do that, but, well, it didn't argue and went on ahead; the Windows 10 Install was complete four hours later!

The IT Guy told me it would crash and burn constantly, but, when testing the machine that didn't happen. In fact, the machine is much faster than when it had Windows 7. And, wonder of wonders, it activated!

Everything looks good, so I'm going to make three more Windows 10 USB drives and update the rest of them all together on Tuesday.

Sometimes things just work out . . . It's been a long time coming, but well worth the wait. IT guys can recognize experience when they see it . . .
