Well from what I read , a 5 mile radius of the hives must be free of pesticides and such. But how does one know how far they go? They don't have little GPS's on them??

As a rule of thumb the foraging area around a beehive extends for two miles (3.2 km), although bees have been observed foraging twice and three times this distance from the hive.

Yep bees will travel up to five miles for forage (some one put bees in the desert and put forage at increasing distances to see where they did not come for the forage). Most honey is made at the one mile radius.
