I am sorry for highjacking this thread, but this is a thread called Today, in Chillout, and this happened today.

I understand there have been some other sporting events today, too, didn't @Martin mention something about SSS league (Scottish Synchronized Swimming)?

    Strange how strongly I react.

I have never been interested in sports, exceptions being ice hockey in international level, billiards (pool & snooker), golf, sailing and Formula 1. None of my exceptions are typical "sports fanatic" stuff.

But, seeing my dear Finland to beat Canada in Ice Hockey World Championships final tonight, and especially watching live the team to get their gold medals, then listening our national anthem and watching each and every team member to sing it, I surprised myself and started crying. I've now watched the highlights about ten times, will certainly watch another ten times tonight.

It might of course be that my expat status affects me. I've been home to Finland last time in November 2012, in my mother's funeral. I miss the language, culture, real sauna, black bread, Finnish mustard and world's best sausage HK Sininen, the best lager in the world Karhu III, afternoon newspapers, everything. In my life today here in my adopted home country Germany, it can be months that I do not speak my mother tongues Finnish or Swedish (yes, I have two; bilingual family from officially bilingual country).

Whatever it is, today gave me a surge of patriotism, and I feel grateful for that.

    Signed: A proud Finn

Why is the thing they bash in ice hockey named after a Shakespeare character?

Simple: Because ice hockey is glorious, noble sport, deserving its players and equipment being named after great cultural figures.

"Glorious, noble sport" ???? It's more violent than rugby !! There's more dirty fisticuffs than in kick boxing ! Goal keeper takes 99% of the goal and puck is not visible even when it's not moving. Teams should be called "Warring factions". I prefer tennis as of lately, that's individual sport where player's merit is what counts. Roland Garros in Paris is starting and I'm set to binge watch it next two weeks.
