Don't you guys in UK have some extra (voluntary) health plans. In Canada, for 15 bucks a month I had Blue Cross insurance that added many bonuses to OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) that included some amenities like helicopter transport instead of ambulance in case of accident, single bed hospital room, one pair of free eye glasses a year, free medicine from a list and large discount for non-prescription drugs.
Here in Serbia, we have free medical care and a large list of free prescription drugs.

There are plans and various options for private medicine but things like helicopter transport is free if you need it, as is ambulance transport - Obviously transport is allocated on medical need which is the right way to do it. My main issue with the private health schemes here is a lot tempt nursing staff that have been trained by the NHS, with Higher salaries, (I do not blame the nurses for this, they have families Etc), but contribute nothing to the training of the nurses which is around £70000 for basic three years.

I know about your NHS, but I had no idea that even even surgery is completely free. Thanks for educating me.
The only thing you pay for are prescriptions at £8.75 per item( I think) but there are a lot of exceptions. Under 18s, over 65s and certain chronic illnesses get medicines free. All hospital treatments are free.

Helicopter transport in the UK is not a part of the NHS it is a charity funded by contributions and provided free at point of need.

I've never understood given the rubbish that successive governments are willing to fund that the Air Ambulance and lifeboats are left to charities

If charities will pay for something the politicians will let them, it leaves more money in the pot for essentials like monitoring the beach quality in the pacific islands and when there's a problem they can pass the blame to others

I know I'm grateful that I live in Wales and don't have to pay for my meds, plus get new glasses every year for free, although if you go for something up market and expensive you do have to pay something towards them but I'm always happy with free frames.

Hubby has to pay towards his because of the lenses and frames he has to have, which is why we weren't happy when he was rushed into hospital the end of last year and he'd not long had new glasses but had another pass out and ended up with his face smashed up and his glasses broken, he had to pay again to have them fixed.

We get free dental care as well, that's if you can find an NHS dentist in the area you live, which is very difficult as they are all private practices.

Mostly for health reasons, I have not had an opportunity to visit my beloved and greatly missed native Finland in long time, last visit being to attend the funeral of my dear mother six years ago.

Today my favourite Finnish artist Cheek had his "Good bye" concert, having announced he would end his career in this concert. The concert was in my all time favourite city of Lahti, Finnish winter sport capital and host of multiple Nordic Ski and Biathlon world championships, a city where I lived most of my time before emigrating some 30+ years ago.

I had a ticket for tonight's concert, original plan being I would be this week in Lahti. However, after my doc told he has an obligation to inform my health insurer that I was advised against travelling, I had to cancel the trip.

Luckily, I get Finnish TV here in my adopted home country Germany through an IPTV subscription. If you have never seen a grown up man cry, you should have been here when I watched the concert live. It ended just a moment ago, and I am profoundly filled with nostalgic memories of my native Finland.

Have to try to think positively. Home is not a place, it is a state of mind.
