Morning Josey
My wife's friend is becoming very stressed. Everyone who has worked around a house knows, if was easy there would be no repair people.
A great deal of Older homes only have 2 wire Romex without a ground.
If you take the cover off of your electrical main panel you will see that both ground and neutral are bonded to the same point. That is OK , some people do the same at the outlet on a two wire setup by using a pigtail from neural and connecting it to the plugs ground. This would fool the tester but it probably is not a good idea.
Agree Josey but this one was "renovated" and has a newish breaker panel.
Of course this means little. Incompetence never takes a holiday.
Basement is all drywalled or I would just replace from panel
My basement ceiling is plastered with wire mesh in it. I would have to rip it all out . Here to replace a Panel one must be a licensed electrician and it has to be inspected. If you take the cover off of your electrical main panel you will see that both ground and neutral are bonded to the same point.
