    There's actually a secret to this:
    The handwriting is intentionally bad because the patient was not supposed to be able to read it. The prescription is supposed to be read only by the apothecary when presented to him for filling.
    In the old days of Galenical medicine with all the old powders and philtres, being able to read the prescription might mean the patient could actually source many of the medicines themselves (especially since they were often common items like ginger and cinnamon).
    If the patient could make up his own medicine, guess what happened to the doctors' pocket-book, not to mention the apothecary.
