    2008 Ford Edge vehicle problems

Are there any current/former mechanics in here?

About a month ago, my vehicle would start, i'd drive it for a day to pay bills and run errands. Well, then i would leave it over night and the next day i tried starting it and all i would hear is clicking sounds. I diagnosed it as a dead battery. I had a neighbor give me a jump so i could run errands again. I started getting an ABS message on the dashboard so i thought I needed new breaks. Then the next day, i tried starting it again. Nothing! No clicking. Lights wouldnt work, automatic door locks didnt work or anything. Would a failing battery cause warning message lights and cause my thermostat needle to go all the way up to HOT even though i have coolant?

    In a word, yes.

There's an old trick my Dad taught me; Reach in an tap the horn, sound okay or like it's squealy. If it's night time try the lights, if low or non existent you have battery problems. The former in both cases means okay. The latter not so good, the battery may be weak or might just need a cleaning.

If your going to clean wear old clothes, if you get any whitish yellowy crusty battery corrosion on you or your clothes it'l sting you and burn a hole in your clothes. Watch your eyes and wash up after your done.

Your battery may have top or side mounted connections, my experience is that side mounts don't get as much if any oxide as top mount posts but the side mounts need at least wire brushed to.

If yours is top mounted the first thing I'd do is remove the battery terminals Negative black cable ( - ) off first, on last. Take care when you remove the Positive red cable ( + ) that it doesn't touch any auto body parts or it'll arc. Clean them and the battery posts with a tool similar to these: Battery Terminal Brush Cleaners A plumbers fittings brush would work to but I've found it's a bit too large in the confined battery box area.

Brush only hard enough to remove the light gray oxide from the terminals and posts, all you need is to make them shiny.

This next part should be done on the grass otherwise you'll end up with a brownish stain on blacktop or concrete.

Then clean the top of the battery, terminals, and posts with a mix of baking soda 1 cup and water about 1/2 cup, use an old paint brush to scrub it around when it looks done i.e. no more fizzling rinse it off with clean water. If you have extra do it again until you run out of the mixture. Dab the top of the battery and terminals dry.

Replace the terminals remember, red + first, negative last - the battery post will have a plus or minus to tell you which is which match 'em up, and snug the bolts until the terminals no longer move on the posts. If you have any dielectric grease apply a light coating all over the terminals and what shows from the top of the post, this eliminates the ambient air that causes the oxidation.

If you don't have the grease and maybe you have to go to the auto store to get a brush they should have it there, you can also find protective sprays or they also make red and green felt washers that you put on before you mount the terminals to protect from oxidation.

You can either test the horn, lights or get in an start 'er up. If you have neither then I'd say you're looking at a new battery.

One more thing check your owners manual these new vehicles have a reset procedure for the computer and idle when a battery is replaced and I've had a ford that had to be drivin' at least 10miles to reset the computer and idle, my chevy only needed to hit the normal running temp of 240° still that was almost 10miles to, so, when it starts and runs plan on takin' a ride.

I'll post this video link and one of the first things he does is to hook up a battery tender that holds the current so your car doesn't lose its settings., if you don't have a tender, expect to lose at the least your radio pre-sets.

If you have or can borrow a VOM, measure the voltages across the posts. Scratch the tops with the clips to get a clean shiny spot or how ever you attach them wiggle them to get a clean contact, what reading did you get?

These are the equivalent voltages to percent of charge:
    12.66v . . . . . . . . . . 100%
    12.45v . . . . . . . . . . 75%
    12.24v . . . . . . . . . . 50%
    12.06v . . . . . . . . . . 25%
    11.89v . . . . . . . . . . 0%

Any reading lower than 12.24 is time to take it to an auto parts store and have them check it, if they don't do it for free go to the next one. Do you have advance or autozone's in your area? they'll check and install for free. See if they'll also do an alternator test and if you do decide to buy new ask whether they use a tender so you don't lose your pre-sets for computer, idle, and accessories. If you get a strange or no answer go somewhere else. Go with your gut.

Here's one price for a 2008 Ford Edge SE from Advance out of Van Buren.

If it's 12.24 or higher I'd do the cleaning in my first post; lower, and I'd start looking for a new one. If it's the original battery it did damn good for 10years.

Thanks for responding! I did get a new battery, but I had to go to Wal-Mart. It was $109. Made me sick. I did not want to pay that much for a battery, but I had no choice. I haven't had the chance to test it out, but everything does work. It starts fine, lights work, automatic door locks work. I have expired tags and no insurance at the moment, so i'm hesitant to drive it right now to test everything out. I'll post when I am able to.

    You're welcome, that's good news!

That's a shame, all juiced up and no where to go.. 2008 Ford Edge vehicle problems-stick-out-toungue.png Forgot all about wal-mart, ours here took out their auto shop but I believe the other one still sells batteries. I know their high but $109 isn't too bad, I'm payin' 40bucks for lawn tractor batteries.

Yea, you don't wanna get caught with expired tags and no insurance, here in PA it's tags, insurance, st. inspection and emissions test every year. Just had the wife's car done, with lube, oil change, and filter it came to $83bucks. Drivers license is every 4years.

Yep, take your time, no hurry, you might get away with it if it was a life or death emergency but then all you need is to get a trooper that has no sense of humor.

I live in Arkansas, so we don't have to do State Inspections anymore. They stopped that a few years before I started driving, which was in 2002. Never had to do emissions. Have no idea what that is. Our Drivers License is good for 8 years now. . lol Cost $40 bucks though.

I'm on the fence with inspections it did find some problems with our vehicles that required fixing before they developed into major problems. For owners like my wife and I that keep things until they fall apart every second or third year would be nicer, for owners that have to have the newest bling or if it's a rental let the dealer handle the safety aspect.
The last I knew our border state Maryland, has inspections only when the vehicle is sold. Either way the owner has to remain vigilant but with human nature the way it is most owners drive their vehicles until a wheel falls off or if they see smoke coming out the back, then they get it fixed.

Emissions testing was federally mandated for all States back in 1967 to improve air quality, but the mandate zeroed in on States that have high traffic volumes and left it up to the States to police themselves, well, we all know how that went, remember human nature?

[rant on] I live in a County that requires emissions testing but all the Counties that surround us do not. The County I'm in is a funnel for people getting to and coming from work, shopping, and play and that's a sore point for us in the County, it wouldn't be so bad but I-81 is butted up against Blue Mountain 2miles as the crow flies from our house and on these hot humid days you can look in that direction and see the grayish, brownish haze that runs along the mountain because of the inversion layer that the weather causes. Someday; today, tomorrow, and Tuesday it's supposed to be in the 90's if conditions are right I'll post a picture of it here.[/rant off]

Oh, and it's not just vehicles that come under the law any engine that uses internal combustion for power is included, from lawn to construction equipment and beyond: Regulations for Emissions from Vehicles and Engines | EPA However, just recently the present Administration is working to relax the laws: EPA to roll back car emissions standards, handing automakers a big win | Washington Post

I could save on license fees every 4years it's $30.50 but since I'm over 65 I'll be 67 on the 15th I could go for their 2year renewal at $20.00 so it looks like I'd save but:
    • 4years at 30.50 for a regular license.
    • 2 times 2years at 20.00 equals $40.00

Is that right? If it is who's foolin' who? I think it's one of those "Here's your sign" moments. And, I don't know if it's true or not if that puts me in a highlighted pool where the State could require me to re-take my drivers exam. The State already does this:
Licenses are renewed every four years, with no special provisions for older drivers.
The state Department of Transportation essentially audits drivers. About 1,900 randomly chosen drivers a month, all over age 45, are required to get a physical from their own doctor and an eye exam, either from licensing officials or an eye doctor, before they can renew a license. It also fields about 22,000 reports a year of possibly unsafe drivers from health providers, family members and others.
    Claims Journal
Arkansas has nothing like that, from same link:
Licenses are renewed every four years for all drivers, with no additional requirements for older drivers and no legislative attempts to add any.

Well, thanks for readin', all this car talk reminds me I have to run to the store for supplies, but maybe I should take my truck it'll be easier on my legs...

So, if i were to drive up through your area, and I got pulled over, would I get a ticket for not having an inspection/emissions test even though my car is registered out of state?

Good question! I don't believe so, but you know me; Please let me elaborate...

The patrol officers here are pretty sharp and I wouldn't believe that they pulled you over just because you didn't have an inspection or emissions sticker, although that would stand out they'd notice you're from out of state and probably give you a pass.

On the other hand, you said you were stopped so they noticed something something safety related, maybe a burned out bulb, a crack in one of your windows, oh, and their big on windows being tinted too darkly they have this aversion to you being able to see them, but they can't see you or what you're doing.

Once you are stopped it leaves you wide open to an inquiry on your identity and whether or not you're the legal owner of the vehicle that is in your possession.
I know, I know, there are all these articles on the web about your rights, but I figure s/he stopped me for something and as long as everything is on the up an up I'll get out of here a lot quicker if I'm nice and co-operative rather than if I put up a stink.

So the trooper checked your drivers license, registration, and insurance, they check out okay and there are no wants or warrants on you or your vehicle.
You might get a warning on the burned out bulb, and the cracked window, but in PA as long as you can prove the window tint was factory installed and not done as an aftermarket s/he has to walk away from that, fuming maybe, but has to walk. Since you had the warnings and maybe even if there were no warnings issued there is a high probability that a report of the traffic stop would be sent to ArDOT.

There is another area concerning firearms during a stop, but I daresent broach the subject because of forum rule: 8. No discussions of religion, politics, or firearms.

I can't have firearms anyway, so that's out of the question. .

If a hot woman cop pulled me over, i'd be flirting my way out of the ticket. . LOL
