From what I've read, schools don't teach it anymore & it's apparently very expensive to switch over to newer software. Although it's still surprising to see it in use nowadays. But people that know it well can set their own price for services.

I did a bit of COBOL programming but I've forgotten most of it. I once heard someone describe COBOL as more suitable for writing novels than serious programs and I have to agree.

There is a very large cost for the writing, there is even a bigger cost in interfacing to other apps and testing.

These systems have grown over the years and there are all kinds of hooks from other systems. Like trying to untangle a bowl of spaghetti.

Exactly, and COBOL was ideal for writing spaghetti code. GOTOs all over the place.
