This Cobol / Mainframe skill is not a new thing. I use to say to my developers, and that was eight years ago, the people with these skills are a dying bred, literally a dying bred.
Yepperz, you're right on that. The folks that know the language are either retired or passing on. The article says one guy can get $100 an hour for his services. Hard to believe that it costs so much to switch over that they would stay with a 50 yr old language.

    A $100 easy.

There is a very large cost for the writing, there is even a bigger cost in interfacing to other apps and testing.

These systems have grown over the years and there are all kinds of hooks from other systems. Like trying to untangle a bowl of spaghetti.

You know I would have probably learned that language had my parents given the go ahead to send me to school for that. I told them I had an interest in computer programming & even called a couple schools myself.

However, being that they were old fashioned & being the early days of computer tech (late 70's), they were "We're not wasting our money on you learning something from a Star Trek show that won't be any use down the road." They wanted me to learn something "that I can use & is practical."

Oh well, I suppose no one could have guessed that it would get as big as it did.

I think he was trying to avoid a hard reset because I've had to do that, & it's a huge PIA of setting everything up again the way you had it. I don't blame him for trying everything before doing that.

You must be rolling in the $$$ you ol' COBOL head

What kind of router is that? When I bump into this issue a hard reset takes it back to factory issued password.

Still another way in... would like to see if mine has that. Seems that would be a security hole.
    Mine is a tecnicolor tg589

    Username is engineer
Password is the access key from the bottom of the router

Not sure if this is intended for isp to remote into router if needed
