    Linux here I go...

I 'm using Microsoft software for more than 25 years now.
    Windows 3.1, 95, XP, 7, 8 and now 10 are Microsoft OS's that I have used.
I'm a basic user. Have basic knowledge about computers.
But I have to say this: Windows 10 is an absolute piece of shit OS!
The effort made by Microsoft to spy everyone to the second, created an OS that is absolutely inferior to
    previous products.

I find absolutely insulting the updates that take control of the computer and make it unusable.
You don't know what the f$#& the OS is doing and for how long! The HDD is always at 100% load!
This is a process that i'm enduring for weeks now in my new Intel i3 7100. It's a basic PC that Microsoft made its usability miserable compared to Windows Seven.

Windows Update procedures are a disaster. Microsoft removed the user from the equation!
The Linux community got another member and Microsoft lost a 25 years customer that used to be happy...

I'm sure that there will be fanatics attacking me, but many others will have the same opinion...

And this made me look at Linux...

That's pretty much how everything is now.
Privacy pretty much is dead at this point.
I'm in the same boat as you as far as length of time, o's.'s, etc.
I may know more about pc's though, as I keep up on stuff and learn it.

Can Linux run .EXE files? If so, I may end up making the switch.

No it cannot, but most have repositories with updates and new software. The easiest one to try is below:

So cool ice cubes are jealous PCLinuxOS

Some Distro's of Linux can use a Windows Emulator called Wine, that can allow you to run some x86 Executables but not the major players that draw people to Windows, but there are alternative Office Suites and Graphics programs which once learned can allow some interaction with others using Word, Excel, Photoshop, Etc, (there is always some fine tuning when transferring files between Office and Clones of Office) . There are not that many games if that is you requirement, and obviously if you utilise an emulator you will always have a performance hit over running programs directly in the OS they were designed for
