    Actually it's not as strong as it used to be so maybe it's getting less on account of she's using it more.

    This is true. And as I mentioned, it's not as prevalent once you use it a while. It does have ceramic heating elements for even heat distribution. Maybe get one & give it a shot, your Wife would probably like the fact it's not as messy.
