Should I re-enable (or return all return to default) either or both for safety (computer life)?!

Platform Power Management Capabilities:Supported Sleep States
Sleep states allow the computer to enter low-power modes after a period of inactivity. The S3 sleep state is the default sleep state for Windows platforms. The S3 sleep state consumes only enough power to preserve memory contents and allow the computer to resume working quickly. Very few platforms support the S1 or S2 Sleep states.
    S1 Sleep Supported false
    S2 Sleep Supported false
    S3 Sleep Supported true
    S4 Sleep Supported true
Actually, i don't see anything to be really concerned about.. These settings are just to adjust latency
In the PCI Express power management options there are 2 levels you can choose from.

The difference between them are power savings versus the time it takes to recover from the sleep state (Latency).

Well after some time it FROZE again, but this time went into "frozen" sleep, had to use OFF button/switch, start again. So put all in HP optimized power plan back to DEFAULT, ran powercfg /energy again and file:///C:/WINDOWS/system32/energy-report.html basically unchanged, esp. in the Mobile Partner & Sleep states of which I was concerned

Just now saw your response, but am leaving it in default anyway

Thanks for all your help and advice

My ex-wife was a Programmer Group Leader in charge of Testing at MS Redmond/WA w/ 40 men under her. I helped her get her CS/IT degree ["C++ Forever"] and from what I know I am happy that anything works at all!! And that my lovely EliteBook still works ....

Did you see that post about downgrading Intel management engine driver? And about uninstalling HWinfo software, if you have it?

If none of this apply to you, clean install is perhaps the only solution.
Otherwise, I suggest in-place upgrade (mounting latest ISO from MS and setup Windows over existing one - like a refresh, but apps and files remain intact, mostly). Am affraid it won't work for you, since any problematic driver will most probably remain.

I know you folks are way down the path on this but since you know exactly when the freeze occurs I think I would look in event viewer and see what is happening say 30 seconds before the event. (all four logs)

Next does your machine show the same behaviour under Safe mode (hold shift and click restart to start the Advance Options menu.)

Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10

If it does it would tend to add evidence that this is Windows / BIOS rather than a third party "thing".

Slight update: insofar as Reliability Monitor gives concise info derived from Event Viewer (I read) and insofar as it is rare that a given freeze has the same cause or failed whatever as the previous, it long ago became clear that there is no consistent item or feature that fails. So I had basically given up on in the moment eliminating the system freezes (remember I posted that it at least once froze while in Sleep Mode, and several times when no user-activated programs or apps were running [yeh, I know there are always automatic processes]). Instead my goal is now to extend the time I can leave the computer without it freezing. So far it has been that 5 min away from it is safe, so I run to make instant coffee, etc., and run back to move the cursor or slide the screen over before 5 min. I had been concerned that Mozilla forced me to use x64 instead of x86 .... but so far it seems that the now-default 64-bit is OK. (I would re-install 32-bit and then FF would automatically update it to 64-bit)

So just now while on a phone call I put the machine into Sleep Mode for almost 30 min .... and it came out still running properly without freezing. Now I know it is at least possible to use Sleep if I need to leave it for more than 5 min. And in the worse case, stop and re-start if it freezes. Further, it does go into Sleep Mode automatically as per the setting times.

    Hey, that's at least something

Still don't know if this activity happens in Safe Mode. Understand if you don't want to try but then I would try Clean Boot.

Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts

Before trying diagnostic procedures I always recommend that you create a backup of your data off machine, create an Image with a tool like Macrium Reflect and have bootable media that matches your current Windows environment.

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

Insofar as outdated drivers are a known cause of freezes, I had updated them using HP Support Assistant when possible. However when latest the Intel(R) PROset Wireless WiFi & Bluetooth both crashed ("stopped working") 8x over 18 hrs., and HP several times could not install an update, I found and downloaded Intel Driver and Support Assistant Download IntelĀ® Driver & Support Assistant which then searched all the installed Intel drivers and software, downloaded and installed exactly the two I needed (out of all their loaded drivers, the others of which were already updated via HP).

Dunno if that fixes anything (this system will freeze just by looking at it after 5 min or more if nothing is happening), but I want to pass on this Intel Driver and Support Assistant find

(however when I know it will be unattended for more than 5 min, I now put it in Sleep Mode and so far no freezes coming out of Sleep, so that is an easy working temporary solution .... though I won't go so far as saying the problem is actually solved)

Hi Airider. Did you try Safe Mode and does the error persist?

Well I do not consider what is happening to be an error insofar as almost every time there is a NEW "error" which results in freezing. When I am only viewing documents with no browser or Mobile Partner Internet connection, it now does not freeze, nor now when coming out out of sleep.

The impression I have had, since this condition started with v1703, is that after being idle if I ask Firefox, etc., to do something or too many things too fast, it would freeze after that. That is, all seemed good till I pushed it too much immediately after idle . At the same time, there would be a lot of "working on it" tones loudly coming from v1703. So I suspected PCI Express Link State Power Management and set it to different values, incl. "off", but the problem persisted so since default maximum also made no change it is back to where I had set it before: "moderate" power savings plugged in and on batt.
