This is not a clean install. w.1703 was installed with windows update. You have to try the clean install: download w.1703, put it on cd or usb key, start with the cd or usb key, choose custom intallation, format and delete the partitions (except the hp of restoration if there is one ), the partitions will be recreated by clicking new ... At first do not install the hp drivers to see if there freeze or not. if it does not freeze anymore, intall the hp drivers gradually.

I checked after re-start and VSS is running in Manual. I previously tried setting it on Automatic and then on Automatic (delayed start). All 3 of those settings still allow the 5min freeze. What causes VSS to stop running at or just before 5 - 7 min idle ...?
    From MS TechNet here:
"This is a normal condition. No further action is required."

VSS is an implementation that allows volume backups to be performed while applications on a system continue to write to the volumes.

Don't be bothered with VSS, it does its task and shuts down when nothing is written to volume backups.

Thank you and I certainly believe that. Question is why does this normal condition, since v1703 (same apps installed, same hardware) now not "normally" but ALWAYS get involved in these freezes? I could guess that VSS shutdown then precipitates a freeze, or is at least signficantly involved as a trigger (or result?).

In old Chinese wisdom they say that "certain things like to happen together", a statistical correlation. As a degreed physicist (plus sometimes engineer) I understand the concept of "statistical correlation". Normally such a 1:1 correlation should turn the focus to that specific relationship. Not being even slightly close to a PC or Windows expert, I have turned here for insight and hopefully solutions (yes I am well aware of the complexity of multi-millions of lines of code and hardware from different manufacturers all trying to work and do a good job together)

But it shows up as being turned off at the same time as the freeze, so there must be some kind of correlation. Animals running or flying away en masse do not cause the earthquake or tsunami, but indicate the condition. What does VSS "know" and how?

Can software or some lines of added code prevent the time-consistent freezing?

Martijn, just FYI...he's got 2 threads going in parallel since this morning, so you may need to post in both, I guess. I did in the other one, kinda what you said.

Thanks to both of you! Was about to try to delete that thread now anyway, so also moot point.

    Next question:

Not sure of correct terminology, but is it somehow possible to increase the idle "timeout" (?) to a bit over 10 min (15 min would be perfect).
